Cacao Agroforestry — Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, Thailand·2026 — ongoing·Sarnies

Field research and design recommendations for growing cacao in an agroforestry system, feeding into Sarnies' food ecosystem.

Working with Sarnies, this project looks at how cacao could be grown in Chiang Mai as part of an agroforestry system — cacao under a canopy of other useful trees and crops, rather than as a monoculture.

I carried out field research: visiting farms, taking soil samples, and assessing the conditions on the ground. From that I put together design recommendations for how cacao and other crops could be grown together sustainably.

The longer goal is to integrate this production into the wider Sarnies food ecosystem — cacao and crops that can find their way into the bakery and the menu — grown in a way that supports the land rather than depleting it.
